If you live in an area that has a sizeable wildlife population, at one point or another you may have to deal with having pests in your attic. Most of the time, the offending parties are animals such as squirrels, bats, raccoons, and mice or rats. Because these animals can carry diseases into your home, and they may do a lot of structural damage if left to their own devices, it is best to get rid of these pests and keep control of them as soon as you notice a problem.
Firstly, identify the kind of pest infestation you are dealing with in your attic. While there are universal solutions to keeping pests out, it can be a good idea to know what you are dealing with when trying to remove it. Take a look at the droppings around your attic. For example, mice have smaller, more compact droppings, whereas raccoons tend to have larger piles of droppings. Look for nests as well, as often mother animals will enter attics to give birth.
Once you know what kind of infestation you have, you always have the choice to either call a professional exterminator or animal control person, or handle the infestation yourself. Your best bet may be to either let a professional handle the entire removal process or set live traps yourself and have professionals remove them. This is because in some areas, killing certain wildlife, bats in particular is illegal. By using live traps, you are avoiding any possible fines for killing a protected animal. Using any poison pellets may put any family members or pets in danger as well. For a mouse or rat infestation, using sticky glue traps or spring traps is also feasible.
Check your attic for all possible entryways. Seal these holes off with wood, putty, mesh, or any other sturdy material. Once the area has been sealed, set up live traps around the attic near locations where the animals are walking around the most, or allow professionals to come in and do this part for you. If you are dealing with bats, allow professional bat handlers to get them out of your attic. Once the pests have been removed, prep your attic to ensure that the animals won't get back in. You must decontaminate your entire attic. Otherwise, the scent of the other pests will entice new pests to try and make a home in your attic. Put on gloves and a mask and remove as much of the droppings and contaminated insulation as you can, then use a vacuum to remove the rest. You can hire a company to perform the cleanup process as well, if you wish, or simply do it yourself. Following these steps should ensure that your attic remains pest-free. This is one of the surest way to control attic pest in Toronto and helping you lead a healthier life without creepy creatures crawling in and out of different corners of your room.
