It is one thing for men and women to go green in their homes, but what if every business became a green business? There is so much waste that happens in the workplace that only a small amount of effort would generate great savings in energy and money. It appears that individuals no longer want to be bothered about wastage and tidiness. There use to be a time when waste not, want not, was a precious saying that everyone recognized.
It would prove immensely valuable if businesses went green, yet there are a lot of easy ways in which they can do this. An office equipment that would benefit from a policy change would be the office printer. If offices used less paper, fewer trees would be required to be chopped down. An easy way to sharply cut back on the paper consumed, would be to print on both sides. Trees perform a task which is valuable to the environment, which is to take out carbon dioxide from the air during photosynthesis. Reducing the use of paper is only one way for an office to become eco-friendly.
With the expansion of the internet, businesses are nowadays connected all over the world, so the need for business travel should be able to be decreased. Those conferences attended by people from all over and far away could be done away with, saving lots of money and energy. A considerable strain is put on the planet with all of the business travel, and the use of big automobiles, and corporate jets. The expense of air travel may be replaced with the inexpensive cost of video conferencing. The internet makes it possible also to save on travel and office expenses by letting individuals do many jobs at home. This can make a great difference, although not each and every job can be done in this fashion.
A simple way for the workplace to become earth-friendly and save a lot of paper is to use email. Think how much paper could be saved, if people would only choose to pay their bills online. Our planet will be well-off, with more tasks done electronically rather than with paper. A huge way for the office to save a lot of energy is to stop using stand-alone computers and monitors, and switch to laptops instead. More or less 270 watts of energy are used by the desktop PC and monitor, whereas a laptop doesn't consume more than 50 watts. An added energy benefit of laptop computers is sleep mode, which is automatically entered after a pre-determined period of not beng used, normally set to between 15 and 20 minutes.
Screensavers consume more energy, so don't be gulled into thinking the opposite. The largest saving of energy and money a business enterprise could generate, though, would come from shutting down every desktop computer or laptop computer each time they were not in use. If all business organizations were to do this, enough energy would be saved to power the city of Chicago for an entire year.
