Some people believe that parenting is instinctive and comes to people naturally. This may be true to some extent, but we live in a complex world and sometimes we have to learn new skills in various areas of our lives, and this includes parenting. The things that come to us naturally might all be well and good but most of the time we're just replicating the same mistakes that our own parents made with us. It is best to look at your own parenting style as objectively as possible and to see whether or not you need to make some changes.

It is imperative that you set the very best possible example for your son or daughter. It's harder to lead by example than it is to simply tell your kids how to be but they needs examples more than orders. It is easier for kids to learn through observing others than it is for them to learn simply by being told things so it's very important that you always match your words and your actions.

When you're a parent you are naturally going to be your child's first role model so if you set a good example, you have a better chance of having your child actually live up to your standards. Parents who simply tell their kids not to do something, like using profanity, but then are always doing that thing themselves will find that it is the actions and not the words that the kids heed.

Every parent feels frustrated, angry or just plain overwhelmed at times. When these feelings start to set in, take a break. It is better to put some resources in place so that you can ask someone else to watch your son or daughter if you need to take a breather. This person can be your partner or a family member or a friend or a babysitter whom you trust. Make your list as long as possible so that if someone is busy you have someone else to call. Even if you haven't yet reached your breaking point, you need to have some free time to spend by yourself. You do not always need lots of time for this, even a short walk down the street and back can help you refresh your perspective. You'll be a better parent if you take some time for yourself and don't try to be the perfect parent 24 hours per day.

It is a challenge sometimes but you should work hard to stay calm. Even if you do not feel especially calm, resist the urge to take that anger out on your kid in an outburst. When you act out of anger you aren't being that effective and it sends the wrong message to your child. Even in instances when discipline is called for, it needs to be done in a straightforward and calm manner, not in anger. It is natural to have emotional moments but if you feel your control start to slip it is time to take a break from the situation and give yourself some time to calm down. More importantly, don't let yourself make any decisions about your actions until you've calmed down. Your disciplinary actions should be based upon rational decisions not just your emotions. As a parent you need to stay in control as much as you can.

The parenting skills we've looked at in this article are just some of the considerations every parent has to be aware of. Parenting skills can involve many things, from listening to your child to knowing when discipline is needed. Being a good parent means finding the sweet spot that exists between being involved and helping them learn to find their own ways.
