It would be crazy to think that a parent could learn everything they need to know in one year of their child's life, so be prepared to be an eternal student. There will be days when you feel like the child since you are learning new things. A whole new world will open up to your child as they progress through each grade level. All children want to grow up quicker than their parents want them to. We all know the deal about that, even though some children cope with leaving home better than others. Your child will appreciate the various ways you will walk alongside them in the challenges they encounter.
Kids in grade school and high school today all experience some form of peer pressure from time to time. Kids in middle school and high school feel the brunt of most of the peer pressure especially today. Most kids will not tell their parents what is going on so they are left in the dark if it is happening. Parents can only offer their support and tell them that they will be there for them if they need them. So if you have a good relationship with your kids, this is much easier to deal with. Still, though, we are aware of exceptions to just about all rules regarding teens. Coping with these events as they come along might be tough depending upon the situation. Dealing with peer pressure can sometimes be a simple as asking your children if they are being pressured by others and if they need help. Understanding our world is sometimes very difficult, and through proper parenting, you can help your kids process this information. Children, like everyone else, are usually drawn toward activities and hobbies that they seem to be naturally proficient at. Obviously there are always exceptions to the rule, and those include opportunities for your child to be challenged. You need to let your kids experiment and try new things so that as new opportunities in life come along, they will not shy away from them because they appear too difficult. Each experience that they have will build character, and if done gradually, it will help them mature into fine adults.
Disciplining children, with regards to abiding by the house rules, is a policy that should be consistent, and most parents know this. In two parent households quite often one parent has a lot more resolve than the other. If one parent will give in, while the other one won't, then the easy one will be picked on by the children. Children need boundaries, but they will get discourage if the strict parent always get their way. We do not advocate giving-in even one time because that just opens the door to future problems. Once you become a parent, you will understand that it is a very tough job, something that you can't know unless you experience it firsthand. Parenting can challenge you in ways you never thought possible, and the love of your children is what will get you through. That is the most important takeaway we can state as parents, ourselves.
