There are 2 million bags that are being checked in the airport each time by travelers and according to the US Department of Transportation, about 99.5 percent of them get to wherever they are heading on time. A 5 percent chance is then available for bags that did not get to the destination, are broken or missing. 5 percent may just be a minor figure but from 2 million that is equal to 10,000 bags.

The probability that you get your belongings back advises the Department of Transportation in 24 hours is 80 percent and in five days is 99 percent. Irreversibly one percent of those bags will remain stolen or lost. In one year there will approximately 36,500 bags not returned to their rightful owners. The DOT doesn't consider that a significant number, but any traveler who has lost his bag surely does.

Usually it is the passengers who check in late that lose their bags along the way says airlines. In spite of having the same airline when connecting flights the chances of bags going adrift is still pretty big. Mistakenly labeling a bag is also common making them fly to the wrong destination. Other times bags get really stolen.

When a bag does not appear, file a lost baggage statement as soon as you can. There is a possibility that you can see your luggage before 24 hours.

Yet, not everything is solid. Continuously asking for compensation from the airline representative may help you. There is a 90 allocation given before companies will announce the loss of a certain piece of luggage. As soon as declaration is made, the passenger is at liberty to get paid $1,250 compensation for domestic flights by the airlines. The international flights however have a different basis and that is $640 per bag.

$2,500 is given to passengers for the carry in baggage. Lost jewelry, money, musical instruments and other things alike are not covered by the offered amount. These figures are based upon the depreciated value of items in a suitcase. Having receipts for everything will make filing a claim with the airlines a breeze, but most of us probably do not have them. It is a good thing that companies will reimburse you with the exact amount but that would take around 60 days before you can get the money.

If you wish to travel with priceless items, it is best to also buy baggage insurance. A person who is going to travel should check the home renter's insurance policy first before getting insurance. Occasionally, there are policies that will cover offpremise theft.

Availing the expertise of an insurance agent can get you to see what the insurance policy is really about and what it covers. An additional clause may need to be written down in the policy to include other items like laptops. For those major buys during a trip elsewhere all make sure you get an insurance policy that will cover it too.
